Qi Yang Australian Microbial Ecology Conference 2024

Qi Yang

Dr. Qi Yang earned her PhD from Flinders University in 2017, focusing on marine sponge microbiomes as a source of novel bacterial resources. Her research excellence was recognized with the 3-Minute Thesis Award and the Vice-Chancellor’s Prize for Doctoral Thesis Excellence. Following her PhD, she pursued a postdoctoral project in collaboration with ETH Zurich (Switzerland) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China), applying her expertise in molecular biology and microbial systems to explore the intracellular microbiome of sponge cells. In 2021, she was promoted to Research Scientist at Flinders University. Two years later, Dr. Yang joined CSIRO, expanding her microbiome research from marine environments to terrestrial ecosystems. She now leads a project investigating the complex interactions of belowground microbiomes. Recently, she was awarded the 2025 Thomas Davies Research Grant by the Australian Academy of Science, supporting her work on innovative methods for assessing soil health using microbial indicators.
